Mosquitoes & Weeds

Almost everyone has had the unfortunate experience of being bit by a mosquito! According to the World Health Organization, mosquitoes infect over 300 million people worldwide with Malaria and Dengue. Mosquitoes can cause sickness and even death through the diseases they carry. Mosquito bites cause skin irritation through an allergic reaction to the mosquito’s saliva – that’s why a red bump appears on the skins surface.

There are over 200 different species of mosquitoes in the United States that have unique behaviors, bite different animals, and live in specific habitats. Although different species behave uniquely, all mosquitoes share the same four stage lifecycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

Mosquitoes carry numerous diseases that can be harmful, and even fatal to humans. Some of the most common diseases are Malaria, Dengue, Yellow Fever, and Zika. Mosquitoes carry the parasites that are present in these diseases, and when bit, they can transfer the disease over to you. Mosquitoes are unquestionably annoying to deal with and like to breed in standing water, so try to clean up all areas around your house where standing water is present.

By paying attention to certain aspects of your lawn and landscaping, you can reduce the mosquito population that’s near your home! Weeds are typically defined as unwanted plants or plant life that is growing in an area where you don’t want it to grow. Weeds can grow tall and are usually in your lawn and other areas where water can penetrate.

During the heat of the day, mosquitoes will retreat into the foliage of your grass to avoid dehydration. That means the weeds on your property could be a haven for mosquitoes. It’s important to remove tall weeds as mowing your lawn will eliminate a safe haven for a mosquito.  The team here at Trad’s Garden Center & Pest Control would be happy to help out with all your lawn care needs!

It is essential to properly maintain weeds in your lawn, not only to prevent mosquitoes from nesting there, but to also minimize the invasion of weeds.
